Help File for GB7UJS DX-Cluster, Whixall Shropshire from www.wadarc.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Win 95, Win98 & Win2K --------------------- Firstly, check you do have the file TELNET.EXE on your PC by opening Windows Explorer and searching your C drive for TELNET.EXE It should be found in either or both:- C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\ If TELNET will not open, or another programme such as Hyperterminal opens instead then you need to check your PC's file associations. To do this Open Control Panel, click on Folder/Options/File Types. Windows will search for all the file extensions your PC is set up to manage and display them. Browse down until you find the file type "URL:Telnet Protocol". This should display to it's left side, under Extension, "N/A" or just a blank space. If this is not the case then it requires editing as follows:- Highlight the "URL:Telnet Protocol" and click on "Advanced" and "Edit". The "Edit File Type" box opens with two windows. "ACTIONS" should just say "open" "APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM ACTION" should have typed in the box:- rundll32.exe url.dll,TelnetProtocolHandler %l (The last letter of the line is a lower case letter L) Rather than typing the line in, highlight it and copy it to your clipboard using Ctrl C and then click on the second box and type Ctrl V to paste it into the box you are editing. Lastly the "Use DDE" box should NOT be ticked. Click OK as required and your edit is complete. Close all programmes and re-start your browser and bring up the WADARC website, once again click on "GB7UJS" and log in with your callsign. Don't forget once you have sent your callsign to the DX-Cluster it requires some basic information on your FIRST connect only, such as your name and qth and this must be entered in the DX-Cluster format. E.g. To enter your name you must use the "set" command e.g. "set/name Bill" For the format of ALL commands, spend a little time and check the on-line DXSpider Manual just a couple of lines below on the Club Members page. WinXP ----- Telnet has inherent security flaws, such as always sending passwords in plain text, however it's fine for the purpose outlined above. With Windows XP, Microsoft have tightened up security and they discourage the use of Telnet by making it difficult to use. For this reason it is far easier and better to use another communications package called Hyperterminal. This will also solve the problem of the echo of the characters you type on the screen which happens if you have tried to get Telnet working with WinXP. To load Hyperterminal, click on Start/Accessories/Communications/Hyperterminal and when prompted, enter the following:- Host address : gb7ujs.shacknet.nu Port Number : 7373 Connect using : TCP/IP (Winsock) XP will ask you if you want to make Hyperterminal your default Telnet application to which you should answer Yes. In Hyperterminal "Properties", you may need to change the ASCII settings to "Send line ends with Line Feeds" This will then give you a new line when you hit enter. Once you have set it up, every time you use the link from the wadarc website it will automatically open Hyperterminal for you and link you to GB7UJS. All you have to do then is enter your callsign to log-in. Don't forget once you have sent your callsign to the DX-Cluster it requires some basic information on your FIRST connect only, such as your name and qth and this must be entered in the DX-Cluster format. E.g. To enter your name you must use the "set" command e.g. "set/name Bill" If you find any other configurations necessary to make your system work, I would be glad to hear from you and add your findings to this file. email to:- webmaster@wadarc.com File update: 13th April 2005 (c)wadarc 2005 [NB.
