Southport Bach Choir has been bringing choral music to Southport for more than 40 years. The choir has between 30 and 40 amateur singers and performs mainly religious music. Despite our name we do not only sing music by J.S. Bach, see a full list of works we have sung ordered by composer or date. We used to be called the Southport Bach Society but after too many enquiries asking when our lectures were held we changed it to the Bach Choir. Between 1970 and 2008 the choir was conducted by David Williams. From September 2008 Ian Wells will be taking over as the choir's conductor.
There are three main concerts in a season and normally at least one of them uses a professional orchestra and soloists. The orchestra is usually a mixture of students from the Royal Northern College of Music, who are just starting on their professional career, and experienced players from the north-west's established orchestras.
