Each year at its degree congregations the University confers honorary degrees on a number of eminent people in recognition of their achievements in the academic world, in public life in general or in the local community. Honorary graduates at the summer degree congregations this year included one o f the University's most distinguished international alumni, Mr Ong Teng Cheong, President of Singapore; Baroness Chalker of Wallasey, former Minister for Overseas Development; Professor George Bass, the world's leading nautical archaeologist; and the actor, writer and artist, Anthony Sher. The Join t Committee on Honorary Degrees, which submits recommendations to the Senate and the Council for the conferment of honorary degrees, would be happy to receive suggestions of persons whose achievements are such that they might be appropriate recipients of an honorary degree. Anyone wishing to make a nomination should contact Catherine Jones (ext 2008) for a nomination form. Please note that all nominations should be made in confidence and on no account should the person nominated be told of the nomination.
