The start of the academic year saw the introduction of a new, state of the art library computer system. The new system, Innopac, replaces Dobis/Libis which had given eleven years of valuable service. The transition from Dobis to Innopac was begun during the summer vacation and was achieved with lit tle disruption to Library services. Both Library users and Library staff have greeted Innopac with enthusiasm and we have had many positive comments about the new system.
For Library users the most obvious sign of the changeover has been the Library catalogue. The old Dobis line-mode catalogue has been changed to Innopac's World Wide Web (WWW) type interface known as WebOpac. Library users have found WebOpac, with its easy to use 'point and click' operation, its cle ar and attractive screen displays, and its on screen help, a big improvement and they seem to find its use very intuitive. Particularly useful is the ability to limit catalogue searches to certain parts of the Library stock such as periodicals or theses. WebOpac can be accessed from dedicated PCs w ithin the Libraries or from any PC connected to the University networks.
Behind the scenes, Library staff have found that they can perform many of the routine functions considerably more quickly and efficiently. What's more Innopac is capable of delivering the sort of management information that we need to make decisions about the running of a large research university library.
Innopac is not a static system and the next few years will see continual improvements. Innovative Interfaces Inc., the company which produces Innopac is committed to a programme of development and new releases of software. In the short term Library users can expect to be able to place reservations on-line, to make bookings for short loan materials held in the Sydney Jones Library, and to search for material by course codes.
The Library is keen to ensure that Library users play a part in shaping the way that Innopac develops and we welcome feedback and comments on the new system. If there are any points you would like to make, or if you have any questions, please contact your Faculty Librarian. Alternatively, you can u se the Innopac system to 'Send a message to the Library'. Click on the option and then simply type in the message you wish to send. Remember to include your name and card number if you'd like a reply. The Library wants Innopac to provide the sort of service you need, and will be grateful to hear y our views.
