As many readers will be aware, the Senate recently approved several changes to the way in which the University handles its postgraduate student applications. The purpose of this article is to let departments know how they may be affected by the new procedures as they come into effect.
There are two major changes to be noted: all applications will be made on a single University-wide Postgraduate Application Form, and all applications for postgraduate study will be returned to the Postgraduate Admissions Service, located within SCILAS.
The new postgraduate application form is currently being drafted, and will be widely circulated for comment before being finalised. If departments have particular requirements which are not covered on the form, please contact Gaynor Glover on ext 2069.
The use of supplementary sheets for additional information required only by a small number of departments is also being investigated. Once the new application form comes into use, this will replace any departmental forms still currently in use. It is recognised that this may require departments to modify their promotional literature.
Completed applications will be returned to the Postgraduate Admissions Service, where they will be recorded electronically, acknowledged, and forwarded to departments for academic consideration, normally within one working day of receipt. It is anticipated that a version of the database used in the Postgraduate Admissions Service will eventually form the basis of the students records database, in much the same way as the UCAS system does for the undergraduate student records. It is important therefore that the postgraduate Admissions Services records are as comprehensive as possible.
