Waltraud Boxall, lecturer in education with responsibility for the teaching of English in the primary school, now successfully trained as reading recovery teacher, is pictured here during a reading recovery session at Lidderdale Infant School, Liverpool 15. 'Reading Recovery' is an early intervention programme developed by the New Zealand scholar Marie M Clay. It is aimed at children about six years old who after one year at school are identified as finding learning to read and write difficult. The highly successful individualised programme consists of thirty minutes daily for a period lasting between twelve and twenty weeks. During this time, the child reads, writes a short sentence and works with letters and words with an experienced teacher trained in reading recovery.
