First European Award Winner

Professor William Steen, James Bibby Professor of Engineering Manufacture, received this year's Arthur L Schawlow Award for outstanding contributions to the laser industry. The award was presented by the Laser Institute of America to Professor Steen during the 15th International Congress on Applications of Lasers and Electro-Optics (ICALEO '96), an international laser conference held in Detroit in July. The Award was first presented in 1982 to recognise individuals who have made distinguished contributions to applications of lasers in science, industry or education. Professor Steen will be the first European to receive this award.
