    Pacific Asia Research Initiative

The newly-launched Pacific Asia Research Initiative aims to consolidate, develop and extend research and teaching at the University in relation to this important part of the world.

On Friday 15 March the first Roxby Lecture, to mark the initiative, 'Globalization and Urbanization in the Asia Pacific Region' was delivered by Professor Terry McGee (Director of the Institute of Asian Research, University of British Columbia). Professor McGee, a noted scholar of development, human settlements and urbanisation in the region, has held academic posts in Australia, Malaysia and Canada and is currently Director of one of the key centres of Asian research and teaching in North America. He is the author of many publications on development issues: his most recent work is 'Managing the Urban Mega-Regions of ASEAN: Policy Challenges and Responses' (Vancouver, UBC Press 1995).

The Lecture is named in honour of Percy Maude Roxby (1880-1947). Anyone wishing to know more about the Pacific Asia Research Initiative should contact Dr Richard Kirkby Tel: 0151 794 3121/3115.
