Andrea Murphy, a primary school teacher and a former mature
student in the Department of Economic and Social History, is the
author of 'From the Empire to the Rialto', the first study of
Liverpool's black community between 1919 and 1948. As an
undergraduate, Andrea, received a record mark for her
dissertation on the black community in Liverpool and the book was
described as a major achievement by Professor Robert Lee, head
of the Department. The title refers to the notorious whites-only
club, the Rialto, which featured prominently in a race riot in
1948 and was burned down during the 1981 Toxteth riots. 'From the
Empire to the Rialto' is published by Countyvise, Grove Road,
Rock Ferry.
