£ 150000 for cancer gene mapping project

The MRC has awarded £ 150,000 to Dr J K Field and Dr J Risk, of the Molecular Genetics and Oncology Group, Clinical Dental Sciences, in collaboration with Professor D T Bishop, ICRF Epidemiology Laboratory St James University Hospital Leeds, for work on the 'Isolation and identification of the gene responsible for oesophageal cancer in two large pedigrees with NEEPK'. This research has been supported by the North West Cancer Research Fund (NWCRF) for the previous three years and resulted in a publication in 'Nature Genetics' (8, 319-312, 1994), which mapped the Tylosis Oesophageal Cancer Gene (TOCG) to a 7 cM region on the long arm of chromosome 17. The NWCRF have recently provided further funding for this gene mapping project.
