For the first time in its history, the University of Liverpool awarded an honorary degree at a ceremony held outside the UK. Tung Chee-Hwa, a graduate of this University and Chief Executive designate of Hong Kong (see PRECINCT February 1997) was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by the Chancellor, Lord Owen, at a ceremony held at the Shangri-La Hotel.
The ceremony was followed by a gala dinner organised by members of the University of Liverpool Graduate Association (Hong Kong) to raise funds for the provision of scholarships to this University for outstanding students in need of financial assistance. The Association is the largest and most active of the Liverpool graduate associations in the Asian Pacific Region.
