1997 has been a successful year for the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in terms of awards received from learned societies. Recipients of honours included:
Professor Ted Bianco, who has been awarded the Christopher Wright Medal of the British Society for Parasitology for his contributions to Parasitology, Dr Charlie Gilks, Senior Lecturer in Clinical Tropical Medicine, who was awarded the Chalmers Medal of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine, Emeritus Professor H M Gilles, together with another former Dean of the School, Professor Wallace Peters, who were awarded the first prize for their book 'A Colour Atlas of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology' by the Royal Society of Medicine, Emeritus Professor Ralph Hendrickse, who was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in recognition of his distinguished services to tropical paediatrics and child health, Professor Axel Kroeger, who was awarded the Soper Medal of the Pan American Health Organisation for his contribution to malaria control in Latin America, and Emeritus Professor Mike Service, who was awarded the Sir Rickard Christophers Medal of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene for distinguished contributions to medical entomology. Professor Service is probably the leading mosquito ecologist in the world.
