Three first year students on the Modern European Languages Course will be going to Italy during their summer vacation. As winners of the 1999 national Italian Essay Competition, organised by the Association of Language Learning, Claire Lloyd, Chlše Tarrant-Brown and Bjorn Evans have been awarded a bursary which will enable them to attend a study holiday in Italy. During the stay, Chlše and Claire will attend a language course at the Istituto Europeo in Florence, while Bjorn will study at the Istituto Europeo Eurostudi Veneto in Feltre
According to the competition judges, the number of participants this year was exceptionally high. Entrants were asked to write an essay in Italian on their use of computers. Students attending the Italian Beginners' course are encouraged to enter the competition for the intrinsic value of the exercise as well as the chance to extend their language skills and awareness of Italian culture and life.
