The University Court met in November to receive the Vice-Chancellor's Annual Report. In the foreword, the Vice-Chancellor looked back on 'a very active and successful year' which also saw publication of the long-awaited Report of the National Committee of Inquiry into Higher Education - the 'Dearin g Report'.
'I have no doubt that the Dearing Report will herald some far-reaching changes in the UK's higher education system, but I am equally sure that The University of Liverpool will respond to the challenges and will continue to thrive as an international centre of excellence in education and scholarship and in pure and applied research, for the benefit of all', he said.
The Report reveals that:
the number of students registered (as at 1 May 1997) was - Full-time 12,070. Part-time 2,026. Registered for postgraduate thesis 328. Registered in affiliated colleges 6,176. Others 1,345. Total 21,945.
the number of students registered on continuing education courses was 5,232 and on professional development courses 8,339.
the University offered 180 first degree programmes across 103 subject areas and it awarded 2,992 undergraduate degrees, 804 masters degrees, 286 degrees of PhD and 774 diplomas and certificates.
Turnover (for the year ended 31 July 1997) was £157 million, an increase of £1.3m on the previous year.
