The treadmill, which is five feet wide and twenty feet long, can run at speeds up to 37 mph - the equivalent of a flat-out gallop for a fit thoroughbred.
Former Chancellor Lord Leverhulme officially opened the Performance Unit at the Philip Leverhulme Large Animal Hospital in December.
The new Unit, which houses a Saato treadmill and stocks with a computer monitoring, will enable the staff to investigate in greater depth patients with upper respiratory and heart problems, lameness, and a combination of all three. The treadmill has a range of speeds, from walking to a full gallop . It is the only one of its kind in the north of England.
Over £170,000 has been raised through the generosity of staff, students and external donations.
The Hospital has been at Leahurst on the Wirral for over 50 years. Over the last ten years, there has been a great improvement in facilities, with the erection of a new surgical unit and examination area in 1991, and the complete refurbishing of the Hospital in 1995.
