The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has published a list of the 'top 20' institutions according to the value of EPSRC research grants received in the year ending 31 March 1998.
The University of Liverpool, with EPSRC research grants to the value of £23 million, was in fifth position, after Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, Cambridge, Oxford and Southampton.
