The course, consisting of 8 modules, each a week long, provides a detailed introduction to the contributions which psychology can make to the investigation of crime, and although it is intended for police officers and professionals involved in the investigation of crime, no background in psychology is needed.
The course was devised by Professor David Canter, Professor of Psychology and author of 'Criminal Shadows': Inside the Mind of a Serial Killer'. Areas covered include how suspects should be interviewed, whether one detective is better than a team, how crimes can be linked, the 'mental maps' of criminals and the geography of crime and involves case studies and contributions from experienced detectives. Successful completion of the 8 modules and an additional research project (which can be conducted over a subsequent twelve months) leads to the award of the Certificate in Higher Education in Investigative Psychology.
