The Department of Geography was host to around 75 teachers and lecturers who attended its A-level Development Day in June. There was a series of interactive workshops by Department staff and a keynote address by John Westaway, who is a member of the Geography Team in the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. The QCA was created in October 1997 to advise Government on curriculum, assessment and qualifications in schools, colleges and the workplace. It is, therefore, set to play a key role in future education policy. His address, on the future of the geography curriculum at A and A/S level, provided the opportunity for a valuable dialogue between departmental staff and A-level teachers. Liverpool was the first university in Britain to offer single honours geography degrees and it is now among the largest in the country in terms of both staff and students.
