Emeritus Professor Peter Pharoah completed a solo cycle ride from Lands End to John O'Groats, earlier this summer.
Professor Pharoah, 64, who retired from the Chair of Public Health last September, completed the 940 mile ride in 11 days to raise money for Action Aid, a charity which organises self-help projects in Africa and India.
Professor Pharoah rode a touring bicycle and stayed in youth hostels. He set out at 8.00 am, after breakfast, and rode solidly until about 4.00 pm. He drank electrolyte to overcome salt deficiency and avoid cramp and ate chocolate and bread rolls.
'I have always wanted to take on a challenge like this,' he said, 'but I am not a fitness fanatic. I cycle from my home in Allerton to the University and back each day and I occasionally go out for a weekend run.'
His target was 70 miles a day but he managed 85 and was particularly pleased with his performance on the last day. 'I covered 127 miles which was an improvement on my personal best - 105 in one day when I was 18,' he said.
So far Professor Pharoah has raised £860 and money is still coming in.
