Details on this years 2009 Pavement Art Competition will be published on this page shortly! A celebration of the noble art of Screeving!Organised by UrbanCanvas and supported by Open Culture and Liverpool Culture Company, The Bold Street Trader's Association and The Scottie Press, as part of The Liverpool Irish Festival and The Big Draw.
What is it? The 1st open Pavement Art Competition in celebration of the life and times of the Liverpool born Victorian pavement artist James William Carling (1857-1887). The competition is open to all Merseyside based artists and offers the opportunity to showcase your works and talents on the street as part of Liverpool’s Capital of Culture celebrations. This is open to both professional and amateur artists living or working in Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton, Wirral, St.Helens and Halton. In keeping with the work of James William Carling the competition is a ‘traditional’ Italian Street Painting competition involving chalks/pastels ‘screeved’ directly onto the pavement; exactly as James would have done it (paper would have been an expensive commodity to a poor Victorian artist!)
