The University of Liverpool

Liverpool University is situated opposite the Christ the King Metropolitan Cathedral. In fact the Cathedral dwarfs it, yet it is without doubt one of the best educational establishments in the world.

126 Mount Pleasant (D.Lydiate)

The history of the site falls into three chapters.

1. The era before the 1820's when this part of the Liverpool was not yet built upon.
2. The erection of a house on the site in the late 1820's and its later use as an eye infirmary.
3. The demolition of this building and the erection, in 1914-1919 of the present building, the former site of The City Laboratory's School of Hygiene.

For most of the 160 years that there has been a building on this site it has been closely connected with the health and welfare of the inhabitants of Liverpool and the district.

It was therefore particularly appropriate that the present building, situated as it is on the edge of the University precinct and overlooking the heart of Liverpool should be converted in 1985/6 to form the University's new continuing education centre.
