The view of Hope Street begins and ends with two cathedrals, graphically symbolising the history of Liverpool's religious culture.

The Anglican Cathedral's Gothic structure stretches out like an angel, looking down from Heaven, as it hovers above the River Mersey on St. James's Mount.

The design is based on a structure built between 500AD and the 13th Century, yet it was built in the 20th Century (1904-1974) and designed by George Gilbert Scott, later knighted for his services to architecture.

The Cathedral was the first to be consecrated in England on a wholly new site since the 13th Century. The concept was brought to the forefront when Liverpool became an official city in 1880 and a diocese in its own right. In 1885, Parliament gave permission for a Cathedral to be built
