Bridge Loading Competition

Our craft, design and technology activities rarely make it to the news flash page, but this week’s big event was the bridge loading contest.

Children from forms 3 and 4 have spent a large part of this term building bridges out of various materials such as straws and string, spaghetti and lollipop sticks. Our loading competition was to see whose lollipop stick bridge could hold the most weight.

The children could choose whether to load their short span or long span bridge and they were allowed to declare before their bridge collapsed if they did not want to see their hard work destroyed!

Some collapsed in a spectacular fashion.

Some flipped over.

Some bridges lay down under strain.

And one bridge couldn’t be shifted at all with our designed loading system (below) or alternative loading system (left).
On the right is our runner-up who bravely was the first to endure the shock of sudden catastrophic failure!
