HARVEST FESTIVAL 2007

Rainbow Colours

Our theme for this year's harvest festival was "rainbow colours". This celebrates the many colours of nature as seen in the crops and fruit that we grow. It also represents the many different types of people in the world, and while we were celebrating the gathering of food at harvest-time we also remembered that there are millions of people in the world who do not have enough food to eat.

Reverend Evans of the United Reform Church Heswall told us about his recent visit to Kenya with other church members. He showed some film of a Kenyan village school and told us that this school was very different to our own. There were 70 children in one classroom and the only equipment they had was a blackboard.

Mr Hinitt from the Heswall Rotary Club told us how funds from the club are being used to provide medical assistance for babies and young children in Africa who are suffering from not having enough food to eat.

This is how the money raised from the balloon race on our school sports day is used. Let's hope we can sell lots of balloons at next years sports day!

We then heard the exciting news that there are plans to twin our school with a school in Kenya. We can help them by collecting some money to buy furniture and teaching materals and we can learn from each other's experiences by writing to each other.

Even in our own country there are many people who cannot afford enough food. We learned from Pastor Jeffs that the Charles Thompson Mission provides 25,000 free meals a year in Birkenhead. The food donated by our parents each year for the harvest festival is all put to good use in doing this.

In keeping with the theme for this year's harvest festival, our latest band, Rainbow Rock, sang and played "Over the Rainbow". Check out their cool rainbow T-Shirts and have a listen to some of the music!
