Divali

Divali is a Hindu New Year celebration.

Divali means “cluster of lights”.

At divali, houses and shops are scrubbed clean and doorsteps are decorated with multi-coloured designs called Rangoli.

At Divali, Hindus remember the story of Prince Rama defeating the ten headed demon Ravana. Rama, helped by his brother Lakshman and Hanuman, the monkey god, rescued Rama’s wife Sita from the clutches of the evil Ravana. When Rama returned from hiding to be made King, villagers lit his path with small lights called divas, hence the celebration, Divali.
