Paula Hampson is an independent dance performer, teacher and choreographer
based on Merseyside. Trained at The Laban Centre for Movement and Dance,
she has worked worked nationally and internationally with renowned companies
and artists such as The Gregory Nash Group, MacLennan Dance Company,
Julyen Hamilton, Gaby Agis and Small Bones Dance Company and studied
in Europe and North America, developing her movement skills in Release
Technique, Improvisation and Action Theatre with Julyen Hamilton, Nancy
Stark-Smith, Joan Skinner and Ruth Zapora.
In 1993 she received a Bonnie Bird Choreography Award and in 1994 was
the winner of the Liverpool Daily Post & Echo Award for Best Newcomer
in Dance. She also received a Wingate Scholarship in 1994 for research
and to set up a programme of choreographic workshops in Liverpool over
a three year period. Paula is currently supported by Dance Northwest
National Dance Agency through their Dance Management Services Scheme
and is an Associate Artist with Suffolk
Dance Agency.
Choreographic works include:
1993 - Shift, Hampson Dance Group, Performed in the North West and London
Colour Splash, Created for fourteen dancers during one week in residence
at the Bluecoat Arts Centre. Passing Through, Choreographic Commission
from St.Helens College
1994 - Jut, Juxta...Pose. Trio created for Knowsley Arts Festival.
Forever Forward. Choreographic commission for Loop Dance Company, Kent.
Interruption, Dance and video performance. Collaboration with Katrina
McPhearson (Video Artist and Director) and Karen Grant, Glasgow.
1995 - Was, solo and Two Floors Up, Hampson Dance Group. Funded by NWAB,
ACE, Knowsley MB, MDI and Cuff Roberts solicitors. 'The Hampson Dance
Group has arrived and is worthy of close attention' (The Stage)
1996 - Face:Face, solo commissioned by Merseyside Dance Initiative.
1997
- Track, Paula Hampson Dance Company, with sculptures by Faith
Bebbington and music by Gary Lloyd. A Dance Northwest commission. Originally
a site-specific work for the Bluecoat Arts Centre, Liverpool, revised
for performances at The Place, Alsager Arts Centre and Knowsley College.
She Says, Suffolk Dance commission, solo for Anna Williams (Ricochet
Dance Company).
Time for What, A co-commission for Liverpool Institute for Performing
Arts and MDI, collaboration with composer Sianed Jones.
Gulp!, Chisenhale Dance Space, a commission with Andrea Buckley
for the Contact 25 Festival, performance at Chisenhale, Alsager Arts
Centre and Bluecoat Arts, Liverpool.
Flock, Suffolk Dance commission for the Cross-Currents conference.
An eight minute film produced in collaboration with Martyn Hollingsworth.
