RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL
Mike Slemen was an
English international rugby union player of the late 1970's
and 1980's. A winger with great pace and commitment, he established
himself as a regular in the international team.
Liverpool born and bred, Mike played his
club rugby for Liverpool RUFC (now Liverpool St Helens), but
began his links with Crosby when he took a teaching job at
Merchant Taylor's School.
As a teacher of biology as well as rugby and other sports,
he enjoys a reputation as being one of the better teachers
at this very successful school, and it was no surprise when
the rugby establishment invited him to become involved in
the English national team again on the 1990's.
Mike lives in Crosby and regularly enjoys a pint in the Brooke.
We cannot confirm the rumour that after England's 76-0 thrashing
in Australia that he is considering selecting the next England
team from the regulars at the Brooke.
Lyndon Griffiths
is the highest points scorer for the current Waterloo RUFC
team. A 24 year old Welsh fly half, he is a specialist penalty
goal kicker.
In the 1997/98 season he kicked 261 points
which compares with the team's league total of 510 points.
Hopefully this will continue to improve and lift the Waterloo
team to greater heights next season.
As well as being one of the sport's
great rising stars, Lyndon also merits a mention on these
pages because he lives on our road, doesn't play his music
too loud and doesn't park in front of our house like that
lot at number 15.
