Learning Reps in the Construction Industry

UCATT, the construction union, have been busy around Lifelong Learning.

They have an ambitious and very valuable project aimed at introducing recognised qualifications to the building trade in the form of National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs).

The NVQs are aimed at people who are already working in the trade, but have no real way of proving their competence or skills in a transferable way to other employers.

UCATT project worker Wayne Sloan says "It is fantastic to see the project progressing, for instance Laings in Manchester are currently introducing NVQs to their workforce, with assessors being trained up, and a number of candidates already starting to build their own portfolios."

He adds "They are also in the process of setting up a building learning centre, and introducing Individual Learning Accounts, it really is a positive step."

This has been achieved with a lot of negotiating on behalf of Learning Reps, management and also involved TUC Learning Services briefing workers on Individual Learning Accounts. For more information about the project contact Jayne at Preston College on 01772 55016.
