Working
as a volunteer with young people can be demanding and challenging,
but very rewarding and fun. Volunteers need to be able to relate
well to young people and enjoy their company.
Working
as a volunteer with young people can be in a variety of roles.
Many youth groups are run by and/or staffed by volunteers. As
most youth groups run in the evenings, this could be useful
to volunteers who work in the day.
Some
youth clubs also offer specific activities such as personal
development programmes for young people, internet cafes or activities
for young people with special needs.
Youth
Federation in Wirral can help to train and support volunteers
in youth work. People who want to go on to be youth workers
and social workers, often get involved in volunteering to gain
the experience they need for further training and employment.
This
is one of the areas that short term project volunteering can
be useful. There are often summer schemes run where volunteers
can get involved with running or facilitating various sporting,
cultural, creative and educational activities.
If
you have a period of time available, there are youth camps and
residentials locally, nationally and internationally. Youth
camps can be educationally themed or more of a holiday for young
people.
Other
organisations run specific programmes to support young people
who face difficulties and volunteers can help with young carers
projects, befriending and mentoring schemes, literacy and life
skills programmes.
