Older People and Driving Schemes

The number of older people in Wirral is higher than in many other areas of the country and there is a growing need for volunteers to help older people in our area.

There are opportunities for volunteers to help with social activities in day centres or clubs. The WRVS and Age Concern both provide volunteer run lunch clubs across Wirral. Volunteers help to prepare and serve lunch in the lunch clubs, which are often a social life line for older people.

There are several community projects across Wirral that offer to help older people in a variety of ways: volunteer befrienders visit housebound people for a friendly regular chat, help with repairs, shopping and minor domestic work.

Age concern Wirral has a huge variety of services for older people. Most of these services involve volunteers: helping in the mobile resource unit, giving advice, personal care, being an exercise/Tia chi/line dancing instructor or helping with insurance specifically for older people. There are also volunteers involved with Meals on Wheels, housebound library services and Talking Books, for those who and blind or partially sighted.

There are also a number of organisations across Wirral who have volunteer drivers to transport clients to hospital appointments or to and from day centres. Any volunteer who uses their own car will receive mileage allowance. For those without cars or who not want to use their own car, there are organisations which have their own minibus, car or van.

No special licence is required, but generally drivers need to be between 25 and 70 years of age and possess a full, clean driving licence. Non drivers can get involved by helping passengers on and off the vehicles safely.
