There
are a number of options for people who want to share their interests
with other people and pass on their skills.
LEAP
is a voluntary organisation which helps young people and adults
who want to improve their literacy. Volunteer Tutors get training,
the necessary resources and on going support from a licensed
trainer. Tutoring is on a one to one basis.
Opportunities
for volunteers to help with art and crafts classes, including
oil painting, watercolour painting and textiles are available
at the Active Age Centre in Woodchurch and the Society for the
Blind and Partially sighted in Birkenhead.
People
with computer skills can assist with IT training at day centres
or hospitals, or there are opportunities for volunteers to help
people who have had a stroke recover their speech.
At
Ness Gardens, Volunteer Garden Guides help groups that visit
the site in understanding and appreciating the wild life. Also
Volunteer Education Guides work with school groups that come
for educational visits, leading them around the gardens and
helping in the Education Resource Room.
People
with an interest in environment and conservation can get involved
in the Tots Plots project, helping children grow organic food
in mini allotments in primary schools around Wirral. Also the
Mersey Basin Trust has schools liaison volunteers working with
schools to help in river education studies.
Local
primary schools often welcome volunteer classroom assistants
to assist in a classroom, getting involved with reading, literacy,
numeracy and display work.
