All
charities, not for profit organisations and community groups
are run by committees of Trustees.
The
Trustees are the people who are responsible for controlling
the management and administration of the charity. Different
organisations call theses groups by different names, depending
on the legal status of the organisation. Some groups have a
'Management Committee' or 'Executive Committee', while others
are called the 'Directors'.
Being
a Charity trustee requires time and commitment. People wishing
to become charity trustees, need to think about their skills
and interests, and how they fit in with the charity's objectives.
Different trustees will have different skills, these could be
in areas such as:
- Finance
and Fundraising
- Business
understanding
- Legal
knowledge
- Marketing
skills
- Local
knowledge
- Skills
in planning and organisation
Charity
Trustees have legal responsibility for the charity and the finances
of the charity. Therefore there are some exemptions of who can
be a Trustee. Anyone who has unspent convictions involving deception
or dishonesty, is an undischarged bankrupt or has previously
been legally removed from Trusteeship is unable to become a
Trustee.
There
are also committees, working groups and interest groups, that
volunteers can get involved with, that do not carry the same
sort of responsibilities as Trusteeship. These groups maybe
within existing organisations or community groups and may have
charge of a specific project.
