There
are many organisations across Wirral who work with children
of all ages and volunteers can help at play groups, primary
schools, after school clubs, holiday schemes and Brownies/Cubs
groups.
Those
interested in working with pre-school children, could help at
a playgroup or crèche getting involved with play activities
and arts & crafts.
Working
with school age children could involve assisting in a primary
school in a classroom, getting involved with reading, literacy
and display work. Many schools operate after school and holiday
clubs, where volunteers can help in play, and arts activities.
Volunteers
who are interested in helping children with special needs (children
who have a physical and/or learning difficulty) can get involved
with Wirral Resource Centre or Wirral Riding for the Disabled.
If
you wish to volunteer with children, you should be aware that
criminal records checks are necessary, before you are able to
work with the children. (sometimes volunteers have supervised
work with children, whilst waiting for checks to be cleared.)
There
are organisations that also focus on supporting families, especially
families at risk. This may involve volunteers working with disadvantaged
families in Family Centres and drop-ins, or with women and children
who have been exposed to domestic violence and abuse.
SCOPE
have a Family Friends project where volunteers can help by supporting
children with disabilities, by taking them out, visiting the
cinema with them or playing with them in there own homes. This
helps the child and the family. Similarly Home-Start has a group
of volunteers who visit, befriend and help, parents of young
children in need of a bit of extra support.
